Musing at Mahia

In early November I was lucky enough to be able to sneak off to Mahia Peninsula for a few days of writing, reading and beach wandering.

The manuscript I was working on is the sequel to Before the Rising, and much of the action in the second half of the story takes place on the remote peninsula head overlooking Waikawa/ Portland Island where Rocket Lab currently has its launch pad. Not that I could wangle my way out to take a closer look! Thank goodness for the internet. And drone photos.

Inspiration is everywhere when you have the time to pause and step out of your normal, rushed life. Driftwood spotted far along the beach becomes a beached whale, dialogue leaps into your mind (and then out again before you can get back to write it down), meals happen when they happen rather than dictated by the clock or hungry children.

Writer’s retreat.

Writer’s treat.
