February’s Blog 2023

ree

The notes I’d started for a February blog were abandoned mid-month when Cyclone Gabrielle raged through our beautiful corner of Aotearoa reducing some areas to surreal mudscapes with absolutely no resemblance to their pre-cyclone state, leaving destroyed lives and livelihoods in its trail.

There are no words yet, not really, and the two-dimensional images are just...not.

But, amongst all the grief and harrowing tales there are wonderful stories too. Of neighbours looking out for each other. Of those rescued turning straight back around to become rescuers. Of missing animals found alive kilometres from home. Of communities drawing together and forging bonds that will be lifelong.

There are no words yet, it’s too early.

But there will be.
